Communications Consumers new peak body seeks CEO

Australian Communications Consumers Action Network (ACCAN), the newly formed consumer peak body, is seeking a CEO to start up the organisation. ACCAN was formed late last year with some set up funding from the Federal Government and is expected to become the peak consumer body in the field of communications. This will build on work undertaken by existing organisations, including Consumer Telecommunications Network and TEDICORE.

Media Access Australia CEO, Alex Varley, has just returned from the largest international access conference in the world, Languages and Media, held every two years in Berlin. He reports that the audio description scene in Europe is very mixed, with some developments and some slow progress.
UK regulator Ofcom produces guide to Audio Description

Ofcom recently completed an extensive investigation into consumer awareness and use of audio description. As a result of their investigation they have composed a simple guide to audio description. The guide includes basic information on the advantages of audio description, the equipment to purchase and how to access support from the Digital Switchover Support Scheme. While most of the information does not translate to the Australian experience, it provides a useful model for the types of information consumers need in order to engage with access features.
