UK looks at how to regulate Video On Demand services

The UK communications regulator, Ofcom, has opened a consultation process looking at how Video On Demand (VOD) services will be regulated. This process is driven by the European Community Audio Visual Media Service Directive 2007 which seeks to create a level playing field for emerging audiovisual media services in Europe and to protect consumer and citizen interests by ensuring that these services will be subject to some basic content standards. These standards will apply to "television-like" VOD services.

In a first for Australia, audio description is now available for cinema-goers in Adelaide, as part of a national program involving 12 cinemas. AD is widely available and very popular with people who are blind or vision impaired in the UK and US, however it is still under-utilised in Australia and almost unknown.

Major technology expo for access

Hosted by the Royal National Institute for Blind People (RNIB), Techshare 2009 is a major technology exhibition/conference in London's Docklands area (ExCel conference centre) from 16-18 September. Presentations look at practical "how to" access solutions, universal design, media and entertainment and there are hands-on pre-conference workshops.
American conference promotes audio description

The First Annual Audio Description Project Conference was held in Orlando, Florida on 6-8 July 2009. The Audio Description Project (ADP) is an initiative of the American Council of the Blind (ACB) which aims to promote awareness of AD, provide educational resources, heighten awareness of AD in the community, and encourage studies on AD.
