Apple confirms VoiceOver will dictate e-books

Apple has confirmed that VoiceOver, an integrated accessibility tool that uses text-to-speech technology to help vision impaired users use the iPad, will also work to dictate e-books.

The US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) hosted an event in Washington DC on 10 March 2010 covering the issue of broadband access for people with disabilities. In his prepared remarks, FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski outlined the FCC’s approach to its Broadband Plan, which it will deliver to Congress and the President next week.
Research into synthesised speech and audio description

IBM Research-Japan and WGBH's Carl and Ruth Shapiro Family National Center for Accessible Media (NCAM) are conducting a joint study via an online survey on the applicability of speech synthesis for audio description of Web-based video, and are looking for adults who are blind or vision impaired to participate in the research. The study asks for people to provide opinions on a series of videos with synthesised description.

The Dingoo is a handheld gaming device produced in China that is rapidly gaining in popularity in Internet circles. It can be used to play Dingoo-specific games, emulated games from old game consoles, most music files, most video files, an FM radio, view pictures and view e-books. What makes the device even more interesting is that it retails for about $100, and it contains a number of access features including a text-to-speech reader.

Nintendo announces DSi XL, with 93% larger screen

Today Nintendo America announced it will be releasing a new version of the Nintendo DSi model with a screen nearly twice the size of previous models, improving the gaming experience for people who are vision impaired.

ABC TV's New Inventors Access and Ability special

Three inventions to help disabled people are featured in a special edition of the ABC1 television program The New Inventors screening on 10 March 2010. One of the inventions is directly connected to access to new media – a web-based, free screen reader. This invention, the NonVisual Desktop Access (NVDA), was invented by two blind men, James Teh and Michael Curran. There are existing screen readers, but these specialist pieces of equipment cost thousands of dollars. The NVDA is free to the user.
