Media Access Australia reviews the Draft National Curriculum

Tuesday, 27 April 2010 10:21

Media Access Australia’s (MAA) education team has completed a review of the Draft National Curriculum, and Education Manager Anne McGrath recently spoke with Vision Australia Radio about the lack of accessibility considerations for students with sensory impairments.

The Federal Government’s Draft National Curriculum was released last month for public viewing and feedback, and will remain open until 23 May. The draft is comprehensive, covering the subjects of English, History, Maths and Science, and is available online.

Key concerns voiced by MAA include the need for teacher professional development to focus on access to curriculum support materials for students with sensory impairments. The importance of considering these students as a specific group, with particular access needs, in regard to the National Curriculum should not be discounted.

To find out more about the need to increase the profile of accessibility for those with sensory impairments in the National Curriculum, listen to McGrath speaking on Vision Australia Radio [MP3 Audio - 2.09 MB].

More MP3 recordings of MAA's Vision Australia Radio segment on accessibility for people with sensory impairments can be found by visiting the Audio Description on Radio page in the Downloads and Other Resources section of this website.

ACARA (Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority) are welcoming feedback in regard to the Draft National Curriculum on their Australian Curriculum and Consultation Portal from the general public and educators until the 23 May 2010.
