ACTION ON CINEMA ACCESS

Less than 0.3% of all cinema sessions are accessible to people who are deaf, hard of hearing, legally blind or who have vision impairments.

This means 4 million Australians are excluded from going to the cinema.

We believe that EVERYONE has a right to access the cinema.

all films, all cinemas, all sessions

Recently, Village Roadshow, Greater Union, Hoyts and Reading Cinemas applied for exemption from the Disability Discrimination Act for two and a half years. If the exemption is granted, cinemas will get away with providing a minimal amount of captioning and audio description in only 105 out of 41,370 screenings per week.

THIS IS NOT GOOD ENOUGH!

If you feel that all Australians have a right to access the cinema, then forward this postcard to:

Hon. Robert McLelland, Attorney General
attorney@ag.gov.au / Parliament House, Canberra ACT 2600

Senator Stephen Conroy, Minister for Communications
minister@dbcde.gov.au / Suite MG70, Parliament House, Canberra ACT 2600

Bill Shorten, Parliamentary Secretary for Disabilities

Peter Garrett, Minister for the Arts
peter.garrett.mp@aph.org.au / PO Box 6022, Parliament House, Canberra ACT 2600

GO AHEAD, MAKE MY DAY!

NOTICE OF COMMUNTY PROTEST

Hearing and sighted Australians have the choice of going to ANY CINEMA, ANY MOVIE and ANY SESSION.

But what about Deaf and blind Australians?

They have access to less than 1% of movies screened. Why? Because the cinema industry refuses to meet their needs for captioning and audio-description.

We think this is UNFAIR, UNJUST and UNAUSTRALIAN!

If you want to see a truly inclusive Australia, where people with a disability are treated as equal and valued members of our community, show your support by attending our national PROTEST.

On Saturday 13 February at 11am, ACTION ON CINEMA ACCESS invites you to show the cinema industry that 1% is not good enough! Make sure your voice is heard by attending the public demonstration in your capital city.

Protests will be held in the cities of Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide, Perth and Hobart.

Log on to Facebook on Thursday 11 February to find the location of your protest.
