Access features serve a bigger DVD market than subtitles

According to EzyDVD's website, Icelandic subtitles appear on 884 DVDs in Australia's Region 4 market, but audio description features on only 71.
A key to gaining more access on Region 4 DVD titles is for the decision makers of Region 4 DVD content to be aware of the Australian markets for other features, such as foreign languages, compared to audio description and captioning markets. For example:
|
Feature |
Australian market* |
|
Captioning/subtitling |
3,500,000 |
|
Audio description |
530,900 |
|
Italian subtitles |
312,296 |
|
Spanish subtitles |
96,804 |
|
German subtitles |
74,667 |
|
French subtitles |
42,645 |
|
Icelandic subtitles |
Less than 500 |
What is evident from this table:
- Both the captioning and audio description markets are larger than any of the main foreign language subtitle markets found on mainstream DVD releases.
- Access in general could cost-effectively be increased by the industry if more access files were imported for Region 4 release.
- Australia’s Deaf, hearing impaired, blind and vision impaired audiences should be carefully considered by DVD decision makers in what extra features will appear on a title.
Media Access Australia is soon to launch a new, easy-to-use complaints form where you can directly voice your concerns about the lack of accessibility on DVD titles.
Current rate of audio description on DVD – 6%
Current rate of captioning on DVD – 56%.

Paramount DVD labelling
Monday, 17 November 2008 10:40
Paramount Home Entertainment, one of Australia’s major DVD distributors, has recently commenced the adoption of the local industry standard for labelling of accessibility features. For more information on the standards.
Regrettably, Paramount has released its first 60 titles with the standard inaccurately. These titles have both the audio description and captioning logos on them, but do not carry audio description for the blind and vision impaired on the film itself. All titles do carry captions for the deaf and hearing impaired
Paramount Home Entertainment apologies for the mistake in its interpretation of the definitions and for any confusion it has caused. Paramount is making efforts to correct all remaining stock before it is released to the market.
All titles with the incorrect labelling are available as a PDF or in a Word format.
If you have purchased one of these Paramount titles with the expectation that it has audio description, please retain the receipt and return it to the place of purchase. If, for any reason, the vendor will not accept a return or exchange, please contact MAA at
