Latest figures on audio described DVDs – January 2010

Audio described DVD titles on new release shelves during the month of January 2010 stand at 24% of titles. 

The DVD titles released since November with audio description are:

  • Adventureland
  • Beautiful Kate
  • Charlie & Boots
  • Cheri
  • Coraline
  • District 9
  • Drag Me to Hell
  • Fanboys
  • Fighting
  • GI Joe, Rise of the Cobra
  • Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
  • The Hoax
  • Ice Age 3
  • Public Enemies
  • The Taking of Pelham 123
  • Terminator Salvation
  • The Ugly Truth
  • Up
  • Year One
  • The Young Victoria

A new statistic MAA will report on is the number of audio described theatrical releases.  A theatrical release is a film that was commercially shown in cinemas.  The Australian Video and Software Distributors Association (AVSDA) has committed to a majority of theatrical releases on DVD having audio description.  58% of theatrical releases on the DVD shelves in January were audio described. 

A total of 85 titles were researched this month.  Of these titles, the following were audio described in other regions but not in Australia:

  • The Hangover – Warner Bros
  • Is Anybody There? – Hopscotch

Media Access Australia has an online complaints form for DVDs without audio description.  This provides a direct link to AVSDA, the distributors’ association, in a concise format.  AVSDA or the distributor concerned will reply directly to you.  Make a complaint about a DVD without audio description.
